Van Gaal: Netherlands ´will assess Depay´ after Senegal cameo

Louis van Gaal says the Netherlands will assess Memphis Depay s fitness following his cameo in their victory over Senegal.

The Oranje marked their return to the World Cup finals with a 2-0 win over the Africa Cup of Nations champions, with late goals from Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen sealing the points in Group A.

Depay began the game on the bench due to an ongoing hamstring issue, but was introduced for the final 28 minutes at the Al Thumama Stadium and the Barcelona forward will hope to feature against Ecuador on Friday.

We had agreed before the game that he would play about half an hour, Van Gaal said of Depay, who has been limited to just two LaLiga appearances this season.

With Ecuador, he will want to play, but I have to assess his form after thi…

Freiburg make Bundesliga history in 6-0 first-half mauling of Gladbach

Struggling Gladbach were humiliated by high-flying Freiburg, who became the first team in the German top flight to score five goals away from home inside 25 minutes of a match.

Freiburg had lost their previous two games, but Maximilian Eggestein and Kevin Schade put them two goals up with only five minutes gone.

Stefan Lainer and Alassane Plea were substituted in the first half of a horror for the Foals, with boss Adi Hutter s job surely hanging…

Angella commits to Watford

Watford defender Gabriele Angella has committed his long-term future to the club by penning a new five-year deal.

The Italian moved to Vicarage Road from Udinese in July 2013 and has gone on to make 81 appearances and score 10 goals for the club.

Angella was a part of the Watford side that finished runners-up in the Championship last season to secure a return to the Premier League for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

The 26-year-old, a former Italy Under-21 international, started his career at Empoli before joining Udinese in 2010.

His new deal marks more good news for Watford, who completed the permanent signing of striker Matej Vydra from Udinese on a five-year-deal earlier on Wednesday.

Tigres UANL v Internacional: Mexicans still hopeful of reaching final

Ferretti and Co. welcome International to Estadio Universitario de Nuevo Leon on Wednesday, trailing the Brazilian outfit 2-1 on aggregate.

Tigres conceded twice in the opening 10 minutes as they lost in Porto Alegre, although defender Hugo Ayala netted a priceless away goal before being sent off in the second half.

The Liga MX side must now overturn a deficit if they are to meet the winners of River Plate-Guarani in the tournament decider.

I think the team showed courage, dedication, determination and naturally that the result is not good because we lost, but we still have the second…

Leicester City have announced the signing of defender Yohan Benalouane from Atalanta for an undisclosed fee.

The Tunisia centre-back moves to the Premier League club on a four-year deal, subject to international clearance.

Benalouane, who represented France at under-21 level, enjoyed a stint at Saint-Etienne before moving to Italy to join Cesena in 2010.

The 28-year-old has since played for both Parma and Atalanta, helping the latter narrowly avoid relegation from Serie A last season.

Leicester also completed the signing of Caen midfielder N Golo Kante on a four-year contract earlier on Monday.

Blaszczykowski joins Fiorentina on season-long loan

Jakub Blaszczykowski has moved from Borussia Dortmund to Fiorentina on a season-long loan.

The Poland international moved to Signal Iduna Park from Wisla Krakow in 2007 and was part of the Dortmund teams that won the Bundesliga in 2010-11 and 2011-12 as well as reaching the UEFA Champions League final in 2012-13.

However, injuries restricted the winger to just 20 appearances in all competitions last season and he has yet to play for Dortmund under new coach Thomas Tuchel this campaign.

Kuba is not only a great football player, but also a wonderful person, Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said.

For him it is important to gather a lot of match practice ahead of the 2016 European Championship. We wish him well in his sporting future in Florence…

Stopping Messi almost impossible – Koke

Argentina looked out of sorts for long spells against Italy, as Messi watched on from the Etihad Stadium stands, before second-half goals from Ever Banega and Manuel Lanzini sealed the win.

The performance prompted some critics to accuse Jorge Sampaoli s side of relying too much on their star number 10, but Koke says such dependence is hardly surprising.

Everyone looks for him when it comes to games, either for Barcelona or his national team, because he decides matches with a goal, a pass, he said.  When you watch him on TV, it seems like he suddenly changes gear.

If you have him on your team, it s normal that you d look for him.

Spain head into the match after impressing in a 1-1 draw with Germany, a performance that further cemented their place as …

Schalke warn Bayern over Goretzka

Schalke have warned Bayern Munich they have no intention of selling Leon Goretzka amid speculation the Bundesliga champions are keen to lure the midfielder away from Veltins-Arena.

Goretzka has developed into a key figure at Schalke since joining the club from Bochum in 2013 and his good performances have not gone unnoticed elsewhere.

Bayern allegedly see him as the ideal addition to their midfield following the retirement of Xabi Alonso, but Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel has made it clear the 22-year-old is not for sale at any price.

We are the ones making the decision, no-one else, Heidel told reporters when questioned about the midfielder s future.

We are very confident that Leon will still play for Schalke next season. There are very fe…
